I’ve found myself playing a vast array of musical roles in my career. But whether I’m playing rock, pop, jazz, Latin, funk or circus music the goal is always the same:
To give a fiery performance, whilst being sensitive to the composer and the performers around you. To try and inspire the soloist or singer, and be spontaneous and inventive.
I like to find a raw sound that hit’s you at a gut level, obviously I’ve been building a consummate technique for many years now on both bass guitar and upright bass, but you need more than that to play the technically challenging music of the bebop style. You need to be accurate, but feel loose, that’s when the inspired performances come, that’s when you can pick up on the mood and the creativity of the soloists and lift the band to another level.
